Green Turtle, Coral Sea

This turtle was descending through the water column at Osprey Reef, an isolated oceanic reef, about 150 km east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Swimming an intersecting course, I got just one close-up shot before allowing it to continue unimpeded.

Anthias, Bligh Water, Fiji

Some specimens of anthias are exquisite: capturing the flare of their fins involves timing and an element of luck.

Typically only seen at night these tiny bobtail squid bury themselves in the sand.

Bull shark, Beqa Lagoon, Fiji Islands

Shark dives at Beqa, Fiji are an adrenaline rush but there's more to this venture than giving punters a thrill; and hopefully more to these images than sensationalizing the encounter. Shark populations worldwide are in serious decline. With sharks dying at a rate much faster than they can reproduce, the loss of apex predators threatens the health of our oceans and our very existence in the longer term.

Chevron Barracuda, Sipadan Island, North Borneo

One of numerous highlights of diving Sipadan was finning amidst a swirling vortex of chevron barracuda. The school was so dense at times that they formed a curtain through which nothing else could be seen.

Bottlenose Dolphin, Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand

Returning to the mainland from diving the Poor Knights we encountered a pod of bottlenose dolphin who captivated us with their antics of bow riding, wake surfing and leaping. A perfect ending to a days diving.

Green Turtle, Sipadan Island

Towards the end of an early morning dive at Sipadan, I looked up towards the dive boat and saw this turtle swimming down towards me. Shooting up to the light in such calm clear water, the sky appears as if no water medium exists. Were it not for the patch of cloud this image would have lost its context.

Seascape, Niue Island, South Pacific

Niue is reputedly the largest upraised coral atoll in the world. A single but small land mass surrounded by very deep water with drop-offs occurring very close to the land. The island's isolation and coral makeup create an exciting rugged coastline. The exceptional underwater visibility is due to the porous limestone; it has no lakes or streams, so all rainwater filters through this rock into the sea removing much sediment.

Whaleshark: open wide

The annual whaleshark aggregation off Isla Mujeres, Mexico is a relatively newly discovered phenomenon amongst underwater photographers and offers the opportunity to encounter 200 - 300 whalesharks feeding on krill and bonito eggs in an area the size of a few football fields.
